Waterville Valley

Anne,on the summit of Mt Tecumseh

Mount Tecumseh is the shortest official 4K summit in NH. It's located in Waterville Valley and it's slopes hold the ski area of the same name. There are no views from the summit but several outlooks are pretty good.

THE TRAILHEADS

Mt Tecumseh Trailhead #1 is at the Waterville Ski area parking lot. Trail starts off a walkway near Parking Lot#6. It crosses a brook and then ascends moderately along the ski slopes. At a point where a short spur goes left you can see the ski trails. After this is turns away from the ski area and continues to climb moderately to the summit. This is the most popular route especially in winter. Some take the ♦Sosman Trail to the ski trails and down that way.

♦Mt Tecumseh Trail has another trailhead too, it's on Tripoli road (closed from Nov-May.) Having climbed Tecumseh in all seasons and from both routes it's my opinion that this is the most interesting trail to the top. Pretty straightforward uphill hike through a nice forest of beech and birch into the thick conifers higher up. When you reach the ridge take a short spur to the right, there's a nice outlook of the Franconia Ridge. You hike across the short ridge down into a col and then climb to the true summit of Mt Tecumseh.

THE MOUNTAIN

Mt Tecumseh is a fun hike in any season. It's considered the easiest of the 4K peaks though Osceola or Jackson might be easier. If you hike it in winter from the ski area you will hear loud music along the trail for most of the way until the trail turns away towards the true summit. Some take the Sosman down to the ski trails and then ski down the mountain.
