The Osceolas are best seen from the Kancamangus Highway on the hairpin turn. Mt Osceola is impressive also when descending East Osceola. In winter most climb over East Osceola first from the Greeley Ponds Trail
THE TRAILHEADS
I mentioned the ♦Greeley Ponds Trail which begins on the Kancamangus. This connects to the ♦Mount Osceola Trail over the summits. The Chimney area between the summits can be interesting but most take the "easier" way to the right side of it. The ♦East Osceola Slide Trail has been relocated and the Mt Osceola trail (from Greeley) crosses it at one point.
♦Mount Osceola Trail also has a trailhead on the Tripoli Road (closed in winter.) This is the most popular way to the summit in summer. This is one of the easier routes to a NH four in the Whites as it leaves from the height of land at Thornton Gap over 2,000 feet high.
THE MOUNTAINS
Mt Osceola 4,340'
Popular Osceola has stunning views from it's flat cliff-like summit. Sometimes in summer you'll see a dozen people or more lounging on the summit. The climb from Tripoli road is easy on Breadbasket Ridge. Don't miss the great viewpoint before you reach the true summit, take a left through the conifers to see the Western Whites. Seasoned peakbaggers claim Mt Osceola is the "Easiest of the four thousand footers.
East Osceola 4,156
The East Peak is less interesting, the summit is in the woods marked by a small pile of rocks. Going back down to Greeley Pond is an excellent Rock Slide with great views of the pond and surrounding mountains.
