Carter-Moriah Ridge

Heading to Mt Moriah

This is the furthest north of the peaks that make up the forested backbone called Carter-Moriah Ridge. The trail that runs across these peaks are a part of the Appalachian Trail.

THE TRAILHEADS

Mt Moriah is climbed usually on the ♦Stony Brook Trail. The trailhead is located on the right-hand side of Rt-16 north of Pinkham Notch. I took this for my first ascent of Mt Moriah in the winter. It's moderate with a steeper section just below the point where it runs into the main ♦Carter-Moriah trail. Upon reaching the junction you take a left on C-M trail which traverses a ridge with great views into Maine. There are several "false summits" over rocky caps. The final climb to the summit is over a fairly steep dome of rock.

The ♦Carter-Moriah trail is a little further north in Gorham NH. I've heard this is also fairly gradual to just below the summit cone of Moriah where it climbs more steeply to the summit ♦North Carter trail and then ♦Carter-Moriah Trail

THE MOUNTAIN

Moriah is a bald round peak which means "the chosen of Jehovah" or Dome of Rock. Moriah (in Jerusalem) is where Solomon chose to build his temple. The summit could easily be described as a dome. There are typically fine views from all directions including the Northern Presidentials.
