Mts Liberty and Flume

Southern Franconia Ridge

Jessica on the windy summit of Liberty

Driving up I-93 I always get excited when I can see the sharply defined peaks of the Southern Franconia Ridge. You usually see Liberty first because Mt Flume is a little shorter. It always makes my heart beat faster when I drive into the notch and think of the adventures ahead.

THE TRAILHEADS

Most popular route is the ♦Liberty Springs trail. Many do both peaks up and back the same route. ♦The Flume Slide Trail is also located at the Flume Exit off I-93. You can either park at the Flume visitor parking and take the ♦Whitehorse trail (bike path) or drive a little ways north of the visitor center. A fine and adventurous loop-hike is up Flume Slide and down Liberty Springs.

Liberty Springs is a more gradual hike which has some steeper sections below the LS campground. Flume Slide is very gradual almost flat until you reach the Slide where it is steep and rough in places. It can be dangerous in wet or icy conditions and is better to climb than descend. Both join up with the Franconia Ridge Trail on the ridge.

♦The Osseo Trail is also very popular and is located on the ♦Wilderness Trail at Lincoln Woods Parking just east of Lincoln on the Kancamangus highway. This is a mostly gradual walk to the ridge with a few wooden steps higher up.

THE MOUNTAINS

Mt Liberty 4,459'

Both summits are rocky and prominent with fine views. I enjoy hiking the loop up Flume Slide and down Liberty Springs. I've also hiked up Liberty Springs to Franconia Ridge Trail to Flume and back. This may be the best choice on a wet day.

Mt Flume 4,328'

The area around the summit of Flume is spectacular, you almost feel like an eagle with the great overlook of the notch. There is also a great view of Bondcliff and the Bonds. The first time I reached the top it was wrapped in fog. Hikers should take special care here in cloudy conditions as there are several sharp cliffs.
