The first bushwhack is the 3100' contour from the furthest high spot (or western high spot ) on Engine Hill at a bearing of 330 degrees. It takes you from Rocky Branch trail to the Isolation (East) trail. This follows through mostly open woods though you will have to go around some thicker conifers
The woods through here are beautiful, moose live here along with ruffed grouse and spruce grouse. You neither gain nor lose elevation on this hike. Bring snowshoes, there is deep snow and plenty of spruce traps. This route is not recommended in summer. It saves about 300 feet in elevation and two brook crossings.
Cath Goodwin, who's done this route many times.
The second common bushwhack is very similar to the "quicky" on the Cedar Brook trail section of the Hancock hike. The trail crosses the brook, only to recross a few feet away. The bushwhack just stays to the right of the brook bank for a short distance and you are back on the trail again shortly.
The third, is the one that leaves the Isolation trail, just after the now growing up blow-down patch at the far end of the (east) Isolation trail. It can follow the drainage if the water path is frozen. Cross the drainage, go up onto the left "banking" and traverse that through mostly open woods which then dips into a brief thick section just before connecting with the Davis Path just south of the junction with the Isolation (east) Trail.
Have fun out there
