ATTENTION YOUTH GROUP LEADERS

Help Missionaries in Africa by Hiking New Hampshire's White Mountains

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ

1-Phil. 1:27

On a mountain in New Hampshire, a group of kids hiked to a rocky peak to benefit missionaries Hoyt and Lois Osborne of "Kenya Evangelical Mission"in Kangundo, Kenya. 4,340 foot high Mt Osceola was the place where "Seeking the Peak for KEM" was born.

We thought "what a great way for kids to enjoy the outdoors and raise money for a great cause." To show them the beauty of God's creation from a mountain-top is priceless. As an amateur naturalist I'd teach them about alpine trees and plants they encounter as well as the birds and animals that live in this harsh terrain.

It's not all about showing them the difference between "friendly fir and spikey spruce." As we fight against gravity on the sometimes wet, slippery, steep and rocky covered trail we also illustrate a small part of what Christ suffered as he carried his own cross up the hill to Golgotha.

Compared to the GIANTS out West and in other countries, New Hampshire's White Mountains are pretty small. What they lack in height they more than make up in rugged beauty. We love the forested slopes, rocky peaks and graceful ridges.

Because of their reputation we've also come to respect the mountains and the weather that they create. Some days it's 85 down in the valley while the exposed summits are only half that temperature. So we always come prepared and we have a "gear" meeting with our prospective mountain hikers after telling you all about Kenya Evangelical Mission in Kangundo.

We'll hike with Youth Groups primarily from late May to October and we require that the kids have the proper clothing and footwear for the terrain we will encounter. Trails are often rocky and wet in New Hampshire during the summer months.

Here's how you will earn support for Kenya

Most mountains we will tackle have about 2,000 feet of VERTICAL elevation gained, usually in several miles of hiking. Normally people pledge a penny per foot climbed or $20 per pledge if you reach the summit. We'll cover more on this when we come and meet with the youth group.
