Heading up the Frost trail in winter

Mt Galehead is small wooded mountain near Galehead Hut just below imposing South Twin. It is has an interesting lookout below the summit and a good viewpoint to see into the heart of the Pemigewassett Wilderness.

THE TRAILHEADS

Most popular route is ♦Gale River Trail to ♦The Frost Trail to the summit. This is a moderate hike with no steep grades. Galehead Hut is open seasonally and is located at the base of the mountain. Trailhead is located on Gale River Loop Road off RT-3. This road is closed in winter.

Another route would be to take ♦Garfield Trail to ♦Garfield Ridge Trail to the hut and the Frost Trail to the summit. You could bag Garfield in the same day by taking a right onto Garfield Ridge Trail to the summit then backtracking down GRT to Galehead and down Gale River Trail. This would involve a road walk back to your car and is a fairly strenuous day.

THE MOUNTAIN

Diminutive Mt Gale-head gets its name from it's springs which are the "Head" waters of the "Gale" River. The name "Gale" probably came from Suzannah Gale who lived in the area and owned Gale spring. The mountain is remote in winter because the dirt Gale River Road is closed. It's an appoximate 1.6 mile walk from Trudeau Road on Rt-3. Follow the plowed and gated road (on-foot) to the road split. Stay left as the road splits and follow to the second split. At this fork, take your right and the trailhead is just .4 miles. This area sees allot of snowmobile travel so be careful if you're travelling at night.
