Mt Cannon 4,100'

Old Man of the Mountains June 2000

Mount Cannon's shoulder used to be home to NH's famous "Old Man of the Mountains" which fell apart in May of 2003. It's a popular ski area in winter and the tram runs to the summit all year. South of the summit are a couple of peaks called the Cannon Balls. One is a NE hundred highest peak.

THE TRAILHEADS

Most popular route in summer is ♦Hi-Cannon which does climb rather steeply, it starts at ♦The Lonesome Lake Trail which begins at Lafayette Place campground off I-93. It climbs to the ♦Kinsman Ridge Trail, bear right to the summit.

♦Kinsman Ridge Trail is also popular and it's northern terminus leaves from the Cannon ski area picnic area. It's pretty steep in places and goes directly to the summit. In winter part of this now passes through ♦Kinsman Glen, a Cannon ski trail so beware.

THE MOUNTAIN

Mt Cannon is the only 4K summit where you can buy a hot lunch after you summit in winter. But it does lack the "wilderness" experience because of this. Cannon operates the Tram year-round so the summit can be crowded. Any climb of it involves some steep sections but elevation gain is minimal by 4K standards. Climbing up the ski slopes is not permitted.

KEVIN ROONEY AND BRUTUS FINISH THE 48 IN ONE WINTER!
